One of the things I miss about living on the west-coast of the United States is the magnificent sunsets. Here in northern New York state, it can be challenging to find the right conditions to get a great sunset shot.
The shots in this series were taken in two different location. The ones where there is water were taken in a town called Webster, NY along the southern coast of one of the Great Lakes. The others were taken along the side of the road on a trip home.
All of the shots were done with the Sigma SD1 with either the 50-500mm OS HSM or the 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM.
For most of the shots in this series, I used evaluative metering and lowered the EV by -1.0. This helped deliver richer, more intense colors. Processing was done with SPP 5.0.0.1 then exported as 16-bit TIFF files using the ProPhoto RGB color space. From there, The TIFF files were brought into Lightroom 3.4.1 for final adjustments before exporting to sRGB JPG files.
While much of the discussion around the SD1 has been about resolution, I shot this series to see how well the SD1 handled the subtle color gradations found in a good sunset. I can wholeheartedly say that I was very happy with the results and the way the SD1 handled the intense colors.
